SUMMARY:CE Luncheon: Designing Safe\, Code-Compliant Residential Stairways with JD Stairs
DESCRIPTION:Navigating stairway building codes doesn’t have to be a roadblock. Join AIA Las Vegas & JD Stairs for a 90-minute course where we unpack a decade of IRC updates (2012-2021) and establish a clear\, critical path for compliant stair design. \nThis session goes beyond the classroom with an interactive shop tour\, giving AIA\, Assoc. AIA\, and Allied members a hands-on look at how these codes come to life in fabrication. \nCredits 1.5 HSW \nLunch & Tour Included \nCourse Description\nThe International Residential Building Code (IRC) is the most widely adopted model code for 1 and 2 family homes. Significant changes in the IRC over the years have widely affected the design of stairways. Building codes applicable to Stairways\, Handrails and Guards are a minimum standard of safety that can be easily exceeded providing an additional margin of safety for residential occupants and provide the aesthetic desired. Recent changes have clarified many issues previously subject to wide interpretation. Many of these changes have already been adopted by local jurisdictions or are being considered. An understanding of the intent and direction of the IRC model code and how it is applied to the design\, specification and construction of stairways will be provided. This course requires completion of the AIA evaluation to receive credit and certificate of completion \nLearning Objectives \n\nDistinguish between minimum safety standards and opportunities to exceed them using the IRC model code and essential concepts of safe stair design.\nApply and employ the recommended critical path for compliant stairway design to any existing project.\nIdentify the functions of a handrail\, design/specify appropriate profiles in compliance with the IRC model code and define the differences in handrails and guards critical to functional design of safe stairways.\nIdentify the significant changes occurring in the 2012\, 2015\, 2018 and 2021 IRC model codes affecting residential stairway design.

SUMMARY:Designing Walkable Communities for a Resilient Future
DESCRIPTION:Las Vegas defined rapid urban expansion as the fastest-growing city in the United States from 1970 to 2025. Driven by a staggering 40.1% population surge between 2000 and 2010 alone\, our valley expanded outward\, creating an endless expanse of single-family suburban neighborhoods. This geometric\, heavily automobile-dependent footprint has led to a critical strategic question for our profession: Will Las Vegas remain livable in 2050\, and how can we successfully transition residents from their cars to the pavement? \nCurrently\, our valley lacks fundamental walkability. The pattern of rapid outward growth outpaced denser\, mixed-use development\, resulting in commercial areas that are entirely disconnected from residential neighborhoods. We navigate this reality daily—whether it is a punishing quarter-mile trek across the hot pavement of Commercial Center just to grab coffee\, or the dangerous\, auto-centric streetscapes of Spring Mountain Road. The creation of post World War Two suburbia created a seemingly idyllic home with a protected backyard and Weber Grill\, but with Suburbia also came its discontents of an increasingly isolated world \nSprawling on the fringes of the city\nIn geometric order\nAn insulated border\nIn-between the bright lights\nAnd the far unlit unknown \nGrowing up it all seems so one-sided\nOpinions all provided\nThe future pre-decided\nDetached and subdivided\nIn the mass production zone \nNowhere is the dreamer\nOr the misfit so alone \nSubdivisions \nNeil Pert\, Rush \nAs AIA\, Assoc. AIA\, and Allied members\, our mission is not to advocate for an idealized return to a pre-war era\, but to design forward. We must ask ourselves: What are the opportunities for impactful design within our existing growth patterns? Furthermore\, how can the design and construction industry leverage advocacy and education to shape strategic planning\, development priorities\, and zoning processes? \nJoin the Housing Committee for a panel discussion on how to build vibrant\, connected communities against the secular forces of sprawl. This session will empower our members with the analytical insights and strategic tools needed to elevate our communities and transform our built environment. \nEvent Details\nModerator: \n\nDavid Kim – Hatchwell Studios\n\nPanelists: \n\nMiguel Davila-Uzcategui (RTC) – State Assembly District 15 Winner of Democratic Primary Election\nMike Howe (CLV) – Historic West Side\nShane Terry – Ritual Development Group\n\n\nAIA Las Vegas is committed to inspiring and empowering members to elevate our communities. Join us as we explore how the power of design\, advocacy\, and education can reshape the future of the Las Vegas Valley.
